Martyn
Bernard is ranked as Britain’s number one high jumper and a top prospect for London
2012. His medal winning performance at the 2010 European Championships has
reinforced his credentials of being a medal prospect at the London
Olympics in 2012.
Originally
a middle distance runner, Martyn Bernard tried the High Jump at a training session
at his local club and has never looked back. He soon found himself as Britain’s
number one senior high jumper in 2004 and has gone from strength to strength by
winning silver at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and picking up a bronze at the
indoor European Championships in 2007 setting a lifetime best of 2.30m in
qualifying. This was followed by two gold medal performances at the National
Championships and a bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships with a leap of 2.29m.
Martyn also qualified for the high jump final at the 2008 Olympics and the
experience he gained from competing in an Olympic final will be invaluable as
he sets his sights on a top three finish at London 2012.
Away
from athletics, Martyn graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in
2007 with a 2:1 degree in psychology, he has recently started a law degree and
hopes to pursue this as a career when he retires form athletics. A natural
entertainer Martyn is also is very well known for providing spectators with his
version of Gene Kelly’s ‘Singing in the Rain’ during the European
Championships in Barcelona in 2010.
Martyn
is a charismatic and confident individual who is a great ambassador for his
sport and role model for aspiring field athletes. He relishes opportunities to
motivate others to involve themselves in athletics. He also enjoys
promoting physical activities within schools across the country to encourage
the sporting youngsters of the future.
