Eleanor Simmonds named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year 2009
Great Britain's youngest ever Olympic or Paralympic Gold Medallist Eleanor Simmonds capped off a fantastic 2008 by receiving the presitigous BBC Young Sports Personailty of the Year 2008 award on Sunday 14th December at the glittering BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2008 awards ceremony held at The Echo Arena, Liverpool.
Nominated alongside Laura Robson (Junior Wimbledon winner) and Tom Daley (Olympic Diving finallist) Eleanor received the coveted award from World Champion boxer Ricky Hatton and England & Arsenal football star (and former winner of the award) Theo Walcott.
"This is such a fantastic way to round of what has been a fantastic year for me" Eleanor said, "I'd really like to thank my parents for all their support because without them I wouldn't be where I am today and my coach Billy Pye who unfortunately couldn't be here tonight because he has made me the swimmer I am"
Eleanor is now winding down her media commitments to spend a relaxing Christmas with friends and family before beginning hard training in January 2009.
