Heather Fell ecstatic at Silver in Modern Pentathlon
Modern Pentathlon is one of the corner stone sports of the Olympics basing itself on the skills required by any Soldier looking to deliver a message to their superiors. Swimming, Shooting, Fencing, Horse Riding and Running make up the event and Team GB has an illustrious past in the women's event since it's inclusion in 2000 with Steph Cook taking gold and Kate Allenby bronze in Sydney and Georgina Harland winning Bronze in Athens 4 years ago.
The Modern Pentathlon is completed in one day so not only are the varied skills of the athletes under scrutiny but also their endurance and concentration will be teated to the max during the day.
Heather opened her campaign early in the morning with the shoot scoring 185 and finishing in 6th place and followed this up with 20 wins in the Epee Fencing to end that element in 11th place.
She then went to the swimming element and recorded her best time of the season in the 200m Freestyle event to bring her right up into contention for the medals.
The riding discipline can be a lottery as the competitors draw their mount at random from a stable of horses they have never ridden before. Heather showed her consumate skill as a horse women to ride her mount to only 4 faults and put her in second place heading into the decisive 3km run.
The run is set up so that the leader leaves first with the other athletes leaving at a set time gap based on the number of points they are in arrears. Heather had a 19 second gap to make up on the leader Schoneborn from Germany. She recorded the 4th fastest run of the day but it wasn't enough to catch the German leader and Heather crossed the line in Silver medal position to maintain GB's rich tradition of success but also to complete a fantastic journey for herself to end as an Olympic medallist.
