Heather Fell ends year as World no1

Twenty-eight athletes representing 16 nations took part in the Women’s World Cup Final in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal on Saturday 4th October . This is the final competition in the World Cup Series with the top athletes selected to compete from the Pentathlon World Ranking. Recently crowned Olympic gold medallist, Lena Schoneborn (GBR) and silver medallist, Heather Fell (GBR) were two of the high profile competitors in action.

Fell had the fastest swim of the day with 2:10,96 moving her to second placed overall after three events with 3348 points. However, Rublevska maintained her overall lead at 3400 points.

Fell, completed the ride with 1144 points,moved into overall third position (4492) with only a two second handicap behind second place.

The final discipline of the day, the ran began as the sun started to drop. Rublevska took to the course eager to maintain her lead for a golden finish after a consistently good performance throughout the day. However, Rimisaite proved a strong contender and out ran Rublevska after the first lap keeping the lead until the finish to take home the gold and the title World Cup Champion 2008. Fell, also a strong runner overtook Rublevska to take the silver adding to her recent Olympic silver. Rublevska maintained her place in third to complete the final step on the podium with bronze. 

2008 Olympic Champion, Lena Schoneborn completed the day in ninth position.
