Jamie Staff becomes Olympic Champion
Jamie Staff led Team GB's Men's Team Sprint Cycling Team to their first gold medal of the eagerly anticipated gold rush in the Velodrome in Beijing.
Former World BMX and Track Cycling champion Staff has completely dedicated the last 3 years of preparation to the highly specialist task of "Man One" in the Team Sprint Event.
His job is to get the team up to speed as fast as possible from the start - and what a job he did!! Jamie set the best time ever seen in the qualifying round of 17.3 seconds and the team of Jason Kenny and Chris Hoy followed in his wheel to record the World's best time and the first time any team has ever gone under the magical barrier of 43 seconds in 42.950.
GB came up against their bitter and oldest rivals France in the Gold Medal ride but the damage to the French Team's confidence had already been done and Jamie led the team out in any even more awesome display of power of 17.1 seconds to secure the Track Cycling Team's first gold of the 2008 Olympics.
